Children’s Fissure Sealants in Menai
Protecting Young Smiles at Vision Dental
Most cavities are preventable. Good brushing habits, thorough flossing and therapeutic strategies like fluoride and regular cleans all play a role. Fissure sealants are a preventative service we offer to help lower the risk of tooth decay in children and cavity-prone individuals.
Stopping Cavities Before They Start
Fissure sealants are thin, protective coatings we place into the areas hardest to clean: the deep grooves and pits on the back teeth (molars). When sealed, these surfaces can be brushed more thoroughly and no bacteria will settle into the fissures, where bristles cannot reach. As a result, they’re less prone to developing decay.
It’s important to note that sealants do not protect the areas between teeth, so daily flossing is still important!
What to Expect
First, the tooth is cleaned with a special gel to etch the outer layer of enamel. Then we thoroughly rinse and dry the tooth. A piece of cotton or two will be placed adjacent to the area to keep the tooth completely dry. Next, we brush the liquid sealant into the deep grooves and fissures of the tooth. Finally, a bright light cures the material until it has completely hardened.
Ages for Getting Fissure Sealants
Generally speaking, sealants are recommended on the permanent adult molars. Most children get their first set of molars around age 6 and the second set near age 12. This can vary by a year or two, depending on the child. Girls tend to get their permanent molars before boys but that is not always the case. Premolars (bicuspids) sometimes benefit from sealants as well.
Are Sealants Permanent?
Although fissure sealants are long-lasting protective layers, they are not permanent. Sticky foods can pull the sealant off of the tooth. We’ll evaluate your child’s teeth at each checkup to ensure all surfaces are well protected, touching up the sealant if needed.
